Fla. Sex Shop Clerk Reportedly Talks Teen Out Of Armed Robbery |

A sex-shop clerk in central Florida is being credited for keeping a cool head during an alleged robbery attempt by a 17-year-old boy that resulted in no one being harmed. The teen allegedly attempted to rob the Cupid's Corner erotic novelty store in DeBary on Wednesday evening, because he was trying to help his grandparents pay bills, according to a Volusia County Sheriff's Office report. The teen entered the store around 7:20 p.m. and shortly after pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded that the clerk give him all the store's money. But the 32-year-old female clerk responded by telling him, "Don't do this. It's not worth it," according to the police report. After about 20 minutes, the woman, who hasn't been named, talked the teen into putting the gun away. Once it was securely in his pocket, she then handed him a job application, saying that she may have a job for him, and watched him fill it out. The sheriff's office said in a release that the woman and teen even hugged and smoked a cigarette together before she went to a nearby convenience store to report the incident (as shown in the above image from the store's surveillance camera) and the boy left. That's when the clerk called 911 to report the incident. Deputies said they went to the address listed on the application that the alleged would-be robber had filled out; the teen wasn't there at the time. Authorities found him soon after a few blocks away from Cupid's Corner, having abandoned the weapon that, according to the boy, was a BB gun, which he disposed of at a nearby lake. The gun hasn't been found and police say that they have yet to verify the teen's story. Orlando TV station WESH reports that the teen had just moved to the area from Ohio to help his grandfather, who had a recent heart attack. "He's a good kid," the teen's grandmother, told the station. "I don't know what happened. My husband's having all this and he needs six surgeries, and there is no money to do nothing." She added that she didn't think the teen would consider crime as a way to help out, and was glad that nobody was hurt in the incident. The teen was arrested, charged with armed robbery and taken to a regional juvenile detection center. His grandparents said that he will be released to them later and will be wearing a GPS ankle monitor, WESH reports.
